The Â鶹AV School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is proud to announce Mbery Sylla, 2024 graduate of our Certificate in Applied Cybersecurity, as the recipient of the Judith Potter Leadership Award. The award was established in 2018 by the Â鶹AV Association of Continued Education Students to honour the former two-term Dean of Continuing Studies, Judith Potter, who also generously contributed to the award. This recognition is given to one or more SCS students in good academic standing who have demonstrated resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to the community through significant initiatives that benefit others, either at the University or in the broader community.

"Throughout my rewarding career in adult learning, I have been continually impressed by the quality of our students, many of whom overcome multiple barriers to improve their own lives and those of their families and communities," Judith Potter reflects on the significance of the award.

For Mbery, this award is not just a recognition of her achievements; it symbolizes the culmination of her hard work and her determination to make a positive impact. She shares, "I would like to express my gratitude for this distinction [ ...]. This [award] [...] has encouraged me to innovate in initiatives that make an impact in the community."

Mbery’s journey to this moment is especially inspiring, particularly as she navigated significant life transitions while pursuing her academic goals.

After spending several years in project management, Mbery decided to broaden her expertise in IT by adding cybersecurity skills, building on her success in delivering high-impact projects such as GDPR (European Union General Data Protection Regulation) compliance, SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) integrations, and multi-factor authentication deployments in the aerospace and engineering sectors. Just a few months after welcoming a new child, she began her journey at SCS, a decision that reflects her determination to pursue her passions while managing the challenges of new motherhood.

SCS provided the right environment for Mbery to thrive. The flexibility of online classes allowed her to balance her studies with her responsibilities as a new mom. "The demanding program deepen[ed] my interest in various aspects of cybersecurity, from understanding the components of a network to defending it against ever-increasing threats," she explains. This immersive learning experience not only fueled her passion but also prepared her for the rigorous challenges ahead.

Mbery's hard work paid off when she was selected for the 2024 Certifications for Leadership in Cybersecurity (CLIC) Program at Toronto Metropolitan University. She aspires to help organizations strengthen their defenses against cyber threats. "I want to ensure that businesses are resilient and capable of facing the complexities of the digital landscape," she states. Her vision goes beyond personal career advancement; she is deeply committed to making a meaningful difference in the cybersecurity landscape. Mbery recognizes the critical need for skilled individuals who can protect organizations from increasing cyber threats. She states, "Cybersecurity is not just a job; it’s a responsibility. We need to equip ourselves with the knowledge and tools to safeguard our communities." Her dedication to this field is rooted in a desire to contribute to a safer and more secure digital environment.

Mbery's passion for the field is matched by her desire to mentor and empower others. She wants to contribute to paving the way for women in the cybersecurity industry, which has historically seen underrepresentation of women. "I aspire to one day become a role model and attract more women to cybersecurity through education and mentoring programs with Girls in Tech Montreal," she shares. Her commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment in the tech sector highlights her understanding of the broader implications of her work.

As she progresses in her studies and has just earned the two globally recognized SANS GIAC certifications (GFACT and GSEC) within the CLIC Program, she remains focused on her long-term goals. She hopes to leverage her education and experiences to develop initiatives that promote cybersecurity awareness and education, particularly among young women. "By providing mentorship and educational opportunities, I hope to inspire the next generation of women in tech," she emphasizes.

Judith Potter acknowledges the exceptional traits that Mbery possesses, saying,

"Our 2024 recipient, Mbery Sylla, embodies the qualities that this award was intended to recognize. While balancing significant life transitions, such as becoming a parent and advancing her career change, she is also considering opportunities to mentor women and girls in non-traditional fields."

Reflecting on her journey, Mbery acknowledges the obstacles she has faced but remains optimistic about the future, "Each challenge presents an opportunity for growth. I am grateful for the support of my family, my professors, mentors, my peers at Â鶹AV and the CLIC Program." Her positive outlook serves as a source of inspiration for her fellow students and anyone who aspires to pursue their dreams amidst life’s complexities.

As she continues to break barriers, we celebrate that her journey is one full of significant personal and professional transitions. Mbery embodies the spirit of the Judith Potter Leadership Award and stands as a beacon of resilience and determination at SCS.
