The Meter provides timely commentary on current developments in Canadian and transnational business law. Business law is understood widely and encompasses anything from corporate governance to securities regulation, tax, real estate, banking, property, contract, labor, trade law and beyond.

Â鶹AV’s Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP) is currently accepting applications for: 

  • a 12-month clerkship at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA); 

  • a 10-month fellowship at the International Court of Justice (ICJ); 

  • a 9-month clerkship at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR)  

All clerkships start in September 2023. Partial funding is confirmed for all clerkships.

Stefan-Michael Wedenig, LLM’21, was named executive director of the IASL and its Centre for Research in Air and Space Law.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Marie Manikis has received the 2022 Canadian Association of Law Teachers Scholarly Paper Award. Her paper “Recognising State Blame in Sentencing: A Communicative and Relational Framework†(Cambridge Law Journal, forthcoming) won the annual competition. Aimed at recognizing the work of scholars in the first seven years of their academic appointment, this prize is awarded to the author of a paper that contributes substantially to legal literature.

The O’Brien Graduate Fellowships were established in 2005 through a very generous gift from David O’Brien for outstanding Masters or Doctoral students studying in the area of human rights and legal pluralism in the Faculty of Law, Â鶹AV. Â鶹AV’s graduate programs in law are the most extensive in Canada. Courses draw upon the civilian and common law traditions, but also include diverse legal traditions, legal theory, international law, environmental law, health law, human rights law, comparative private and public law, and air and space law.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Rebel Courts: The Administration of Justice by Armed Insurgents (Oxford University Press, 2021), by Professor René Provost, F.R.S.C., Ad. E., has received the 2022 ICON-S Book Prize. Awarded by the International Society of Public Law (ICON-S), this annual prize honours the best new publication in public law, construed broadly.

Â鶹AV undergraduates have a unique opportunity to expand their climate science literacy and acquire tools for taking action to reduce the impacts of the unfolding climate crisis.

Registration is now open to students in every program for FSCI 198: Climate Crisis and Climate Actions, a new undergraduate course featuring a team of multi-disciplinary instructors who will present diverse perspectives on the scientific and social dimensions of climate change.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor François Crépeau, O.C., O.Q., F.R.S.C., Ad. E., has been appointed officer of the Ordre national du Québec. He will be handed his medal by Premier François Legault during a ceremony at the National Assembly on 22 June.  

Admission to the Ordre national du Québec is the highest distinction conferred by the provincial government. Members are eminent individuals who, through their achievements, values, and ideals, have influenced Quebec’s growth and contributed to its renown.

The Â鶹AV Faculty of Law and the LGBT Purge Fund are pleased to announce the creation of an experiential learning award and a research fellowship for law students. Supported by a $250,000 grant from the LGBT Purge Fund, both initiatives will promote student engagement towards 2SLGBTQ+ justice.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Johanne Poirier has received the 2022 John W. Durnford Award for Teaching Excellence. Named in honour of the late professor and former dean John W. Durnford (BCL'52), and conferred by students, this award each year recognizes a law professor’s exceptional pedagogy. Professor Poirier received the award during the Law Convocation ceremony on 26 May 2022 for the second time, having won it in 2019.
