St-Mary’s Hospital was established by surgeon Dr. Donald Hingston and Sister Helen Morrissey (originally affiliated with the Hospitalières de St-Joseph at ±áô³Ù±ð±ô-¶Ù¾±±ð³Ü) to serve the Montreal Irish Catholic population. It first admitted patients in 1924 in Shaughnessy House on Dorchester Boulevard (now part of the Canadian Center for Architecture on Réné Lévesque Boulevard). However, this building was not designed to function as a hospital and, coupled with internal administrative and financial problems, it was closed in 1929. The current hospital building opened in 1934 in the borough of Côte-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. In its early years, St Mary’s was known particularly for its obstetrical service. It expanded with a large nurse’s residence in 1950, two five-story wings in 1959 and a large West Wing in 1968.
